Built on real trips.
Not sponsored content.
I started Cruise Blueprint after planning my own trips and realising how much time, money, and effort can be wasted on things that simply aren't worth it.
Most cruise content is either overly polished or trying to sell you something. That's not what this is.
This is real experience — what I actually did, what worked, what didn't, and what I'd do differently next time.
If it helps you plan a better trip, that's the goal.

Start here.
Four things worth understanding before you book — or before you board.
Most people get this wrong
Choosing the right cabin
Inside, outside, or balcony — the answer depends on how you actually cruise, not which one looks best in photos.
This is where people waste money
Drinks packages explained
The maths most people skip. Whether it's worth it comes down to your drinking habits — not the headline price.
You don't actually need this
Excursions: book or skip?
You don't need an excursion at every port. Here's how to tell which ones are worth booking — and which to explore on your own.
Start here if it's your first time
First cruise basics
The things no one tells you before you board — what to expect, what to pack, and the mistakes worth avoiding.
Not sure where to start? The cruise planning checklist walks you through everything before you board.
What actually matters
on a cruise.
Short, direct insights from real experience — not marketing copy.
Most people overpay for drinks packages.
The break-even point is higher than most people think. If you're not consistently drinking through the day — not just at dinner — you're probably better off paying as you go.
Do the mathsNot every port needs an excursion.
Easy, walkable ports are better explored independently. You'll have more freedom, spend less, and often have a better time. Save excursions for ports that are genuinely difficult or time-limited.
When to bookCabin choice depends on how you cruise.
If you're out all day and only return to sleep, an inside cabin is a legitimate choice — not a compromise. A balcony only earns its cost on longer sailings or scenic itineraries where you'll actually use it.
Cabin breakdownSea days are underrated — if you let them be.
People often treat sea days as wasted time. They're not. They're the part of a cruise where you actually switch off. The mistake is trying to fill them.
How to enjoy themOverpacking is the most common mistake.
Most cruise ships have laundry. Most ports have shops. You won't need half of what you think. Overpacking creates friction at every stage — embarkation, cabin organisation, disembarkation.
Pack smarterMost cruise mistakes are made before you board.
Wrong cabin category, a drinks package that doesn't add up, excursions booked without checking walk-ability — all of these happen at the booking stage. Plan once, save throughout.
First cruise checklistThe questions everyone asks.
Short, honest answers — no padding, no affiliate links, no agenda.
Are drinks packages worth it?
Only if you'll drink consistently throughout the day — not just at dinner. Most people overestimate how much they'll actually consume.
Which cabin type is best?
Depends how much time you actually spend in it. If you're out all day, an inside cabin saves you real money. If you're a morning person who loves a view, a balcony earns its keep.
Are shore excursions worth booking?
Only when the port is limited or logistics are complicated. Easy, walkable ports? Skip the excursion and explore yourself — you'll have a better time.
What do most people get wrong?
Overpacking, overbooking excursions, and buying a drinks package without doing the maths. Most cruise mistakes are made before you even board.
Is a balcony cabin worth the extra cost?
On a longer cruise or a scenic itinerary — yes, genuinely. On a short port-heavy trip where you're barely in the cabin? Probably not. The maths changes depending on the cruise.
How do you make the most of sea days?
Don't try to fill them. Sea days are for switching off — pool, food, a book, maybe a show. The people who enjoy them most are the ones who stop treating them like wasted time.

2 nights pre-cruise hotel + embarkation day — Alfama, trams, pastéis de nata, and the Tagus at golden hour.
Dramatic golden cliffs, sea caves, and Praia da Rocha — the Algarve at its most spectacular.
Ancient Atlantic city on a peninsula — with Seville just an hour away by train.
Gateway to Granada and the Alhambra — one of the greatest buildings in the world.
The Rock, Barbary macaques, and Africa visible across the Strait — genuinely like nowhere else.
September Ibiza — quieter, more beautiful, and Dalt Vila is one of the best old towns in the Med.
La Seu cathedral rising above the harbour — the best city in the Balearics, full stop.
Disembark + 4 nights hotel — Sagrada Família, Gothic Quarter, Catalan food done properly.
The Riviera stop that rewards slowing down — seafront, Le Suquet old town, and a long lunch.
Underrated, atmospheric, and genuinely Italian. The caruggi reward the effort.
France's oldest city — gritty, beautiful, and massively underrated as a port stop.
A walled medieval city tucked inside a fjord. The walk up the walls is worth every step.
Tiny capital, enormous history. One of the most compact and rewarding port days in the Med.
The Acropolis, ancient agora, and a city that never really sleeps — proper bucket list stuff.

Fresh off the ship.
Day-by-day updates, honest notes, and whatever is on my mind — straight from the cruise.

Day 6 — Disembarkation day in Southampton
The quietest hour of the whole cruise was the last one. A dining room breakfast, an empty solarium, and one final lounger overlooking Southampton dock.

Day 5 — Zeebrugge, a quick stretch, and back on board for the final day
Last port day and we kept it simple. A wander around Zeebrugge, a few sailboats, and straight back to the ship for a final day of doing absolutely nothing.

Day 4 — Mont-Saint-Michel, the abbey, and lunch in the village
Cherbourg meant a coach trip to Mont-Saint-Michel. The abbey, the climb, the view — and a jambon and emmental sandwich, a proper doughnut, and a flûette hot dog from a stall in the village, eaten outside with one of the best backdrops in France.
