Katakolon & Olympia

Worth it or not? An honest look at the port and the ancient site that makes it worthwhile.

I'll be honest — there's not much in Katakolon itself.

It's a small port town, easy enough to walk around, but there isn't a lot going on.

Key Insight

The main reason this stop exists is because it's the gateway to Olympia.

So if you're stopping here, I'd definitely recommend booking an excursion rather than just wandering around the port.

Visiting Olympia

Visiting Olympia is a completely different experience.

This is where the original Olympic Games were held, dating back to around 776 BC.

Walking around the ruins, seeing the old training grounds, and imagining what it must have been like — it's fascinating.

It's not just a quick photo stop — it actually gives you a sense of history.

Fast Fact

“The Olympic Games began here around 776 BC — and the site still carries that weight.”

My Advice

If history interests you even slightly, it's worth doing properly.

Trying to “wing it” from the port won't give you the same experience.

Worth knowing before you go

  • Book an excursion to Olympia — don't rely on finding transport at the port.
  • The museum next to the ruins is worth a visit — it houses original statues from the site.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. The ruins cover a lot of ground on uneven terrain.
  • Katakolon port itself is walkable — good for a quick coffee before or after.

“For me, Olympia made the stop worthwhile — but without it, Katakolon alone wouldn't be enough.”
